What are you waiting for?

Grade 9s who inhale deodorant, teenagers who are dependent on taking acid (LSD) or ecstasy to have a good night out, and weed-addicted individuals are all too common in society today. The social pressures and feelings of entrapment lead a lot of teenagers to abusing drugs and alcohol as a way out, or perhaps a way in when it comes to conforming with peers and trying to fit in. In 2006, when I was doing my radio specialisation at Rhodes University, I felt it fitting to produce something news-worthy and important at a place where there is a major drug problem. However, I feel that this piece still holds great relevance today. It is a very real and factual account which I call the “confessions of a drug user.” These individuals were brave enough to speak openly on the issue and I only hope that it serves as an eye-opener for both parents and people who are caught up in the drug sub-culture
I believe it is coming. The legalization of recreational drugs. People want the right to do whatever they want to their own body. After all our Bill of Rights guarantees the right to “Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. I see both sides of the argument here. I have been to The Netherlands where Marijuana use is legal and readily available. From an outsiders point of view it doesn’t seem to have affected its population much. Legalized prostitution there too, but then that is another post all together. The question is, what are the benefits to our society? Well, the taxes that could be gained from those who choose to partake could be HUGE. There would be less gang wars, because they would not have anything to fight over other than “turf”. About 2 million people are arrested each year on drug charges and drug related charges. Without that factor, there would be less overcrowding in our jails and more “dads” at home to to support and take care of their families. Mothers too. Less people in jail equals less money the government has to pay to house them and then rehabilitate them. Jail does not work for these people anyway. Think of the Billions of dollars in Tax money we could save on the “War on Drugs”. Money that could go into education which in the end is the key to everything including just saying no. It would also give a big sting to our pharmaceutical industry. People would not rely so much on the Vicodins and the Oxycontins of this world, rather they would turn to other more natural sources for pain relief. Analgesics are the number one sellers in the world, imagine if the drug companies were challenged truly on their bread and butter? What are the drawbacks? Well, the chance that more people will become addicted for one. Smoking anything into your lungs will cause cancer. We already have enough cancer deaths from cigarettes do we really want to add? More addicts could possibly lead to a larger part of our population needing welfare. Also medical costs could increase due to overdoses and misuse. The thing that people seem to ignore is that Alcohol and Cigarettes are both drugs. Pretty them up any way you want, but they still are drugs. You have those who abuse, and those who don’t. I don’t really see that statistic moving up with the inclusion of more drugs. In fact, it might just become the opposite where people lose the need and the thrill to try them if they are easily available. Personally, I don’t know how drug addicts do it to be honest. I have had access to prescription narcotics for 12 years now and I still get sick every single time I take them. Its a gross feeling and I can’t honestly believe that anyone enjoys feeling nauseated and out of their senses. I abstain from taking my drugs more than I should because of these side effects. Also with the needles? My veins break. I lose them and they hurt. Why in God’s earth would anyone do that to themselves on purpose??? It blows my mind. I’m not going to sit here and say that I have never had any recreational drugs myself. I have. I didn’t care for them personally. I have friends and family who still like to indulge now and then. Hey that is fine with me if done in moderation and safely. At the end of the day its all about being safe and sane. It doesn’t matter if it is Beer or a joint, safety should always be first. DMX..WANTED....AGAIN!!!!!!

An Arizona judge issued another bench warrant for the arrest of D-M-X after the M-C failed to show up in court on Friday. X is facing drug, identity-theft and animal-cruelty charges. His attorney Bradford Cohen tells T-M-Z, "The rapper is currently in rehab at an undisclosed location." During his court appearance, X was supposed to show the judge documentation proving that he is in rehab. When he's apprehended, he'll have to post 120-thousand dollars bond immediately or face jail time.

LIFE OF A ARMY WIFE!

If President Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney were ever to be impeached, their foes could cite this Independence Day as a milestone the day that the nation's first "impeachment headquarters" opened its doors in a storefront near the Beverly Center. "This is an impeachment 4th of July," Byron De Lear, a Green Party activist, said Wednesday. He called removing Bush and Cheney "a patriotic duty to restore the integrity of the United States." Those assembled cited various Bush actions or policies, including "lies that led the U.S. into war." They also said that Bush--Cheney policies precipitated torture, illegal spying on American citizens, and the curtailment of privacy and civil rights in the name of fighting terrorism. The latest irritant was the president's decision to commute the prison sentence of former Cheney aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, whom a jury convicted of obstructing justice. "Isn't it ironic that Paris Hilton will spend more days in jail than Libby?" said De Lear. The day's star power was provided by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles), who had vigorously defended then-President Bill Clinton when he faced impeachment in 1998. "This is one of the most important efforts this country has ever seen," said Waters, speaking to about 300 gathered for a noon rally at nearby La Cienega Park. In an interview, she added: "We can make changes through organizing. If the numbers are in the streets, Congress will listen." Any impeachment motion ultimately voted on by the House of Representatives would have to pass through the House Judiciary Committee, to which Waters belongs. Organizers could not definitively name another "pro-impeach" representative on that committee. In the House at large, they tally 14 like-minded lawmakers, most of whom have signed on to articles of impeachment against Cheney that were introduced by Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio), who is running for president. When asked who might lead the cause in the Senate, Waters paused, then said she would have to defer that question for now. In the end, removing Bush or Cheney from office would require a two-thirds vote by the Senate. In the mid-term elections, many more Democrats and some Republicans spoke out against the war, including some who had originally voted to permit the Bush administration to invade Iraq. But concluding the war and impeaching Bush don't look like compatible policies to most members of Congress, said progressive Democratic columnist Harold Meyerson, executive editor of the American Prospect, in a telephone interview. "Impeachment is a distraction since it's not going to happen," said Meyerson. "At the root of this is the notion that Bush lied us into war and that's been out there 4 1/2 years. Impeachment would stop everything else in Congress and the Democrats think they actually need to accomplish stuff instead of fighting unwinnable battles, especially with poll numbers falling for Congress. The main thing is to defeat Republicans electorally." Republican analyst Arnold Steinberg said an impeachment drive would help his side: "This gambit will excite the leftist base but marginalize reasonable Democrats and alienate independent voters — and motivate Republicans. I can only say, 'Grow up and get a life.' Or, better yet, 'Go for it.' You'll end up sinking Democratic Party prospects for 2008." Critics seeking to define the headquarters opening as a conclave of the political fringe could point out the largely middle-aged, deeply left-wing audience or the accordion player in floppy shoes who opened the rally with a version of "America" that substituted "siblinghood" for "brotherhood." But the audience also included fresh recruits Trevor Torquato, 19, and Lauren Kuzma, 17, of Murrieta. "I'm actually new to politics," said Torquato. "I'm here to be educated. I'm going to register with the Green Party today." "I'm just hoping all of this will get Bush out of office," said Lauren, "so we can get our troops out of Iraq. They don't really talk about that in school. They talk about past history, not what's going on now." The impeachment center was sponsored by Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles, Westside Greens, Santa Monica Democratic Club and the Los Angeles Greens. Activists plan to meet every Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the 3rd Street storefront, where they'll stuff envelopes, do phone banking, spread the word about http://www.bcimpeach.com and make plans to circulate petitions and lobby elected officials. They report that 79 municipalities and townships nationwide have passed impeachment resolutions. Former Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, who spoke at the event, insisted that principles ought to trump narrow political imperatives. "Leadership requires that people step out," she said. "It is not hopeless. Stand up. Do something for your rights." A place to push impeachment Permalink

A Marriage Made in Hell

Why is it that some of the world’s worst marriages last on and on like the Energizer Bunny? Here’s one for example: Josie and Pierre have been married now for 18 years. They met when Josie was doing an article on where to stay in the Bahamas for a travel magazine and Pierre was managing a four star resort and aggressively looking for a fifth star. Josie had attended the Fashion Institute in New York. Three days into her first semester at age 18, she began a five year affair with a 60 year old married professor. When he dropped dead of a heart attack, her family actually celebrated. She bounced back quickly, and immediately took up with another married guy, the editor of a major travel magazine. By and by his wife discovered the tryst, and the editor offered Josie a long-term assignment in the Caribbean. Not being one to waste any time, her first night in the Bahamas she met Pierre at the hotel bar and accepted his invitation to sleep with him in the manager’s suite. Pierre was only ten years older than she is, and single, not her usual fare, but he was French and handsome. Besides, she got to pocket the expense money from the magazine by staying with him. Three months later, they were married on the beach and he was well on his way to getting the Green Card he coveted. Her parents were relieved that he was younger than them and had never been married to anyone except their daughter. Which they knew because they paid to have a background check done on him. Josie now works for an Asian luxury hotel chain and travels 40 weeks of the year, maintaining long term relationships with boyfriends in three different Asian cities. Pierre is CEO of a consulting business he set up a half dozen years ago in their suburban basement, attempting to place professional hotel managers at luxury resorts. So far he has had two or three interested clients, but no interest from the hotels. So, while he and Josie wait for his business to take off, he has started a small French language private tutoring institute in his home. He students are mostly the stay at home wives of wealthy Korean and Japanese businessmen. One of his students recently gave birth to a Eurasian child, a clone of Pierre, which despite the mother’s entreaties, Pierre insisted was not his. Her husband sent her and the baby packing back to her family in Korea. This was fine with Pierre, because his true love is the gorgeous young wife of a Japanese comic book publisher. But, he’s not leaving Josie, even for love. Hey, he has his Green Card, and no wife around most of the time to bother him. She makes hundreds of thousands a year and he never has to sleep with her. Did we mention that as she has aged she has begun to closely resemble Kermit the Frog? Josie consulted with a big time divorce attorney to explore leaving Pierre, but her parents went ballistic. They told her that since Pierre has zero income, she’d be paying him alimony forever if they split. So the blissful marriage lives on. And you could definitely say this lovely couple deserves one another.
Police say a raid at a Perth house last week uncovered the largest quantity of date-rape drug GHB ever seized in Western Australia. They say the 1.6 litres of the designer drug, also known as fantasy, was destined for New Year's Eve celebrations in Northbridge. A 34-year-old man has been charged over the Duncraig haul and is due to appear in court later this month. Senior Sergeant Paul McMurtrie says the seizure may have prevented sexual assaults and even deaths over the festive season. "In quantities of up to four millilitres, it can anaesthetise people and render them unconscious and in quantities of up to eight mils and more, can actually cause a person's death," he said. He says police estimate there was enough of the drug for about 800 individual doses.
