MISTRESS OF THE NIGHT

MISTRESS OF THE NIGHT She moves – A quicksilver vision In the shadowy twilight of evening. Around her she keeps a cloak of serenity To protect her from false friends And leering strangers. Mist parts to reveal more mist, But her way is blocked By hindrances merely glimpsed. She dreams of casting away her cloak – “More like a shroud” – For the warmth of A passionate embrace that never ends. Always she dreams. Copyright 2004 Peter Sherman. All rights reserved.

LOVE BEGINS WITH ELLE

LOVE BEGINS WITH ELLE There’s a lovely young lady who cast a great spell Over me, and I’ll tell you her first name is Elle. Her eyes are bewitching – they ensnare with their charms. It would be rapture enwrapped in her arms. I can’t even sleep, knowing she sleeps elsewhere; I can’t even think, knowing passion so rare. My love for her strengthens with each passing day. For a glimpse of her splendor I’ll pray. And so, dear Elle, ma jolie belle, You’ve got me coming, going, in a whirl But I don’t care because my prayer Is share your life with me and be my girl. Her voice filled with music has captured my heart, It fills up the silence, inspires my art. And also my ardor, so God only knows. That I can’t live with out her – No, I can’t live with out her – I just can’t live with out her…– My wild English Rose. Copyright 2004 Peter Sherman All rights reserved.

NICE GUYS FINISH LAST

NICE GUYS FINISH LAST Harold Weems was an accountant, kept track of every cent He’d deposit all his paychecks, all that money never spent He didn’t have a love life – just too shy around the girls; He would watch the evening late show and dream of golden curls Rhonda was a fast girl from the wrong side of the tracks She dreamed of sparkling diamonds and gleaming Cadillacs Her body was a work of art, kept always on display It set all men to drooling in a most unseemly way. It was in a singles bar they met, a Tuesday Lady’s Night He thought she was a beauty, he thought he was all right He nervously approached her as she began her tease He showed off his expense account as she showed him her knees. NICE GUYS FINISH LAST, BAD GIRLS FINISH FIRST NICE GUYS FINISH LAST, BAD GIRLS FINISH FIRST Soon after they were married at Harold’s country club The reception was a doozy at an all night pub The joint was really jumping with a pumping primo band Harold had too much to drink, Rhonda the best man NICE GUYS FINISH LAST, BAD GIRLS FINISH FIRST NICE GUYS FINISH LAST, BAD GIRLS FINISH FIRST It was less than two years later that Harold saw the light He caught her in the bedroom with the tennis pro one night He took a razor to his wrists and he began to slash; Now Harold’s with the angels, but Rhonda got the cash! STILL

STILL I’ve known you such a long time. It’s been a lot of years – We’ve shared each other’s secrets, Seen each other’s tears. When two lovers break up, it’s such a bitter pill, But I could never hurt you still. Maybe there’s a reason Two hearts can’t be one, But we never find out till the race is won. Now I have inside me spaces I can’t fill, But I could never hurt you still Love can die in anger, Love can die in fear. How can we restrain deepest feelings When we’re near? Anguish, pain, and sorrow have put me through the mill, But I could never hurt you still One can find an answer, Two can find a way, But only two together know the words to say. When two hearts tear apart, Lord, the loneliness can kill, But I could never hurt you still… No, I could never hurt you still. Copyright 2004 Peter Sherman All rights reserved.

THE LION AND THE DOVE

THE LION AND THE DOVE Whither goest thou, my love, Who like an angel soars above The other ladies - nay, a dove That bringeth peace. My heart doth move. Her eyes are brown, exceeding fair - Two gems that warm the midnight air, So luminous their glow doth snare The once proud lion in his lair. Her voice is music from the spheres; The lion lifts his head and hears Its melody of golden tears. He stands up straight and pricks his ears. Her sweetly sorrowed face doth shine As moonbeams glimmer, quite divine - Radiance indeed sublime. The lion (strange) begins to whine And paws the earth in maddened grief. A frenzy quite beyond belief Builds up inside – it craves relief From her whose plaint was deep yet brief. Thou hast gone away, my love, And I know not how best to move Thy heart, oft injured – yet I’ll prove My gentleness can tame a dove. copyright 2004 Peter Sherman All rights reserved.

VENUS BUTTERFLY

VENUS BUTTERFLY Eternal child, forever wild, She casts a spell of bright enchantment. Here now there, without a care For worldly rules and life’s commandment Secret treasure, past all measure, Hidden deep inside her chamber; Buried long within a song That threatens love’s exceeding danger. [CHORUS]] She’ll be there, but only for a while. Winter’s come and she must run and smile. She’s on the wings that lift her when she’s down. Forever wild, forever free. No cocoon, she seeks the moon – Enticing summer midnight madness Passion calls as daylight falls, Betraying innocence and gladness. [SAME MELODY AS CHORUS] She feels the Venus flytrap closing in. As fascination fades she can begin Now to elude a lethal strong embrace – A prison with a most beguiling face. Escaped from trap, she needs no map To tell her where her heart will send her. Danger past, she’s free at last – When love is cruel she won’t surrender [REPEAT CHORUS] Copyright 2004 Peter Sherman. All rights reserved Registered with BMI 2/20/2006
