A friend and I have been talking this morning about the astounding number of young, child-bearing aged women who express a desire for a complete hysterectomy (ovaries and all). Reasons for having this procedure done have been solely as a birth control measure. Obviously these ladies have not taken time to learn more about the procedure, or its after-effects: having to take synthetic hormones for the rest of their lives just so that the rest of the body can try to resume normality, possible increased chances of other cancers, etc.
There are other options, MUCH less invasive and destructive, that would carry the same infertile effect, such as tubal ligation (having tubes tied), uterine ablation (cauterize the lining so that no more can form-hurt like a mother but this is what I had done), or even a simple hysterectomy, leaving the ovaries intact. NONE of these options are 100% reversable. And then there's the pill or IUD.
If a young lady came to you with an idea such as this, asking your opinion, other than referring her to a dcotor, what would you suggest? |
