Best Friends
Enjoying my weekend with my lil hippy Lexy when it occurred to me -
how she really makes me think deep thoughts at times.
It's not that she'll ask me life deciding questions that may -or- may not kick start my "Daddy mode" ...
You know, the proverbial right or wrong -or- good verses evil questions (that parents are supposed to have all the right answers to ...)
It's those little questions -
That with my reflection & review of things said and done
while I'm relaxing or drifting off in a slumber.
I might of blown it off as foolish small talk -or- I might answer without a lot of thought going into my answer.
Either -or- while in a relaxed state and giving some thought to a little question ...
I'm amazed how my child's innocence's can lead me into a true thought provoking and deep subject.
The Question she asked: "Daddy - who's your best friend"?
I answered with a smiling: "You are"!
(which at times, is very true).
As we continued to chat & walk (both, without any true direction at the time.)
Later, I gave the question some serious thought. Many faces race across your mind when "friends" come to thought.
The faces slow down and are not as plentiful when you toss the word "best" in front of it.
I've had many people call me their "best friend" yet, I've only concurred with so few.
I may indeed like a person very much and enjoy spending time with them. I don't necessarily think of them as my "Best friend" though.
(makes me wonder sometimes too, if the few I think are my best friends think the same about me)?
In my short life, I've had SO many close friends. Some I've called my BEST, others I've thought of as CLOSE.
In my years I've had people I've held close in terms of friendship who are now a part of my past.
The "friendship" may have faded, but the PAST memories will always be special.
For those younger readers ... I clarify this:
Yes, you may think that person you talk to everyday and tell your deepest thoughts, secrets and dreams to; is always going to be there for you ...
Twenty years from now, you may only acknowledge that same person with a head nod as you walk past them in a crowded room.
(think back to grade school chums that you may have breezed bye in a crowed hallway during your High School years)
Many seniors and older people I've respected have said it ...
(and the older I get, the more that I agree with them):
"When its all said and done, the number of REAL friends you'll ever have - can be counted on one hand"
I know when I first heard this, So many faces flashed before my eyes and in my thoughts ...
"No way, I have like hundreds of friends"
I thought.
In my lifetime, I've seen friends be shook off the list of many with little or no effort.
Then I've seen them just fade, from relocation or blend with a new job perhaps.
Then there is always the proverbial "wedge" of new friends, family or spouses.
Sometimes its an actual disagreement ...
(worst is a disagreement that wasn't even either of the friends - but that of an outside influence)
With these and the many thoughts (and faces) that I reflected on (before I slumbered)
I did realize that my first answer to Lexy's question probably was the most accurate answer.
(I told her SHE was my best friend)
Because another old saying came to mind in my reflection:
"Blood is thicker than water"
"You can chose your friends, but you cant chose your family" comes to mind as well, but when the smoke clears and no matter what - Your family will always be there!
Oh, I have "FRIENDS" and what I'll probably always call my "BEST FRIENDS" (since about middle school) are still around and have a place deep in my heart.
As I started here today ...
"Those little questions from some little people can really get one thinking".
I think,
I cant wait to see my best friend again ...
