1) Smooth Criminal/Michael Jackson
what can i say. as much as I love to hate on the recently deceased king of pop, i still think his old music is solid. when i was a kid i was his biggest fan. luckily i was never invited to neverland ranch
2)Farewell Ride/Beck
Not a huge Beck fan, but this ones a real mood setter. and the mood is somber with a little bit of adventurous. i just love it. I've already told my brother that it is to be played at my funeral when the day comes. no "Tears in Heaven" for me
3) No Rain/Blind Melon
this song just makes me happy. they had other songs, other good songs, but none are as memorable. i still remember the first time i saw the video. priceless.
4)Subterranean Homesick Blues/Bob Dylan
Love his writing, but i almost always think his songs are improved by someone else singing them. this is the exception. no one else can pull it off. its a jumbled mess and a sign of the times all in one
5)Across 110th street/Bobby Womack
I'll admit i'd never heard of womack until i saw jackie brown years ago, but this song renewed my love of black music that isnt rap. funk, soul, motown. you name it. its just a really hopeless song. makes me feel.
6)Chemicals between us/Bush
I've heard a lot of complaints about Bush from friends, and I see thier points, but its just a really solid song that evokes my early teenage angst. takes me back.
7)Graduation Day/Chris Isaak
All of his songs are sad. and i love them all. a love that most of my friends dont understand. this is the best. try it. youll see
8)Pass it on/The Coral
"just find a feelin', Pass it on". its simple and it makes me smile. overall not a great band but this one gets me
9)Something about us/Daft punk
I love that they steal old funk bass lines. and they do it well. this song is my favorite. just a damn sexy tune
10)Little Sister/Queens of the stone age
I think this might have been the first queens song i heard, and its still up there in my favorites. gets me pumped up. the music more than the lyrics
11)The last time/Gnarls Barkley.
Stupid name, but they know what theyre doin. another sexy song. is that weird to say about a song sung by another man? haha. i dont care.
12)Mishto!/Gogol Bordello
Most of the Music in "Everything is Illuminated" was just instrumental versions of theyre songs. the younger russian guy in the movie is the front man. check it out. its weird in a good way. ive seen them in concert twice, and while ive heard better concerts, theirs was by far the most fun. if you hear it, youll get it
13)Violet/Hole.
Yeah yeah. i hate courtney love too. but in her prime she had a couple decent songs. and this is one of them
14)Throwin shapes/Minus the bear
the best band your not listening to. theyre from the seattle area and ive been a fan from the day i first saw them. this song reminds me of a certain someone and puts a smile on my face
15)Brother/Murder by death
Their albums play like a good book. this song is my favorite of theirs. the whole album is like a musical version of "the road"
16)Elderly woman/Pearl Jam
I did a performance piece involving this song about my grandmother. every time i hear it it brings me close to tears. her and i didnt get along when she was around and the performance art i did helped me get over all of the time we spent hating each other. so its her song now.
17)Where is my mind?/the Pixies
My first introduction to real alternative music. when it was still sort of an alternative. its one of those songs where i go "hey, is this about me?"
18)Georgia on my mind/Ray Charles
Nuff said
19)Lady, your roof brings me down/Scott Weiland
It's a weird one. if you havent heard it, give it a listen. i always listen to this when im in a weird mood. cant really explain it, which is why i think its good. makes me think of the circus
20)Give me one reason/Tracy chapman
Ugly woman, amazing musician. laugh all you want. i love it
21)Electric relaxation/Tribe called quest
the name says it all. one of the most relaxing songs i know
22)If you want me to stay/Sly and the family stone
one of my favorite songs from the 70s. and a band that i think despite their notoriety remains underrated
23)Hunger strike/Temple of the dog
a bunch of great musicians from different bands. usually it doesnt work, this time it did. still one of those songs that takes me to my youth
ok. ill stop here. there are like twenty more on the playlist, but i wont subject you to reading about them.
