Another SBS CASE...His name is KALEB too!! This is NOT about Kaleb Schwade, this is another baby whos name happens to be Kaleb as well. BENTONVILLE -- A judge set a $30,000 bond Wednesday for a 19-year-old man who police say shook his baby for two minutes when the infant wouldn't stop crying, then called paramedics after the baby stopped breathing. Brian Eugene Sousley was awaiting transport to the Benton County Jail on Wednesday evening, held on one felony charge of first-degree battery. Siloam Springs District Judge Steve Thomas set the bond. Sousley told police he shook his son, Kaleb, 3 months old, for two minutes when the baby wouldn't stop crying, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Sgt. Todd Brakeville, a detective for the Siloam Springs Police Department. Sousley also admitted shaking the baby once in mid-May for five minutes, according to the affidavit. Sousley said he became frustrated by financial stress and a lengthy commute to work in Rogers, and because baby Kaleb favors his mother -- who can make Kaleb stop crying more easily. Kaleb had been in St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., for 11 days as of Wednesday. Doctors found massive retinal hemorrhaging, with both fresh and old blood, and said the condition was consistent with shaken baby syndrome, the affidavit states. Prosecutors can't comment on the baby's condition, said Drew Ledbetter, senior trial attorney with the Benton County prosecutor's office. Siloam Springs paramedics were called to Apartment B1 at 300 Meadow Court about 10 a.m. on May 27. Brian Sousley was home alone with the baby and told paramedics he called 911 after Kaleb stopped breathing, the affidavit states. Paramedics were suspicious that Sousley showed little emotion as they prepared to transport Kaleb, they told police. Kaleb was comatose upon arriving at the hospital, the affidavit states. Sousley's story to police changed over several days of questioning. Sousley lives at the apartment with the baby's mother, Sandi Carlton, 19, but Carlton was at work that morning. Sousley first told police that the baby seemed fine when they woke up at 9:30 a.m., but Kaleb began gasping for air when he was in another room. When first questioned by police June 2, Sousley said he shook Kaleb, but not very hard -- just to make him breathe. Carlton told police that one week before Kaleb was hospitalized he had a bruise on his cheek. Sousley admitted to her he accidentally kicked Kaleb with his shoe as the baby was lying on the ground, she said. Carlton thought Sousley was lying so she told him to move out, and he did leave for the night, she told police. Sousley admitted that incident to police. Police then talked to Sousley's mother, Pat, who described her son as a "model father" who "really took good care of Kaleb." On June 4, police interviewed Sousley again, and he admitted shaking the baby. He said after a couple of minutes of shaking, the baby's head fell back to the right and the baby quit crying. His arms were extended and his hands were grasping and releasing. Then Kaleb began having trouble breathing, and Sousley began CPR and called 911, he told police. Sousley was arrested Monday, eight days after Kaleb was hospitalized.
