Mccarthy went to huge amounts of trouble to manufacture evidence against political rivals, and had many in Hollywood and the State Department helping him out. He destroyed the lives, reputations and careers of Physicists, people who had developed the atomic bomb, he destroyed artists and musicians and academics, solely for the purpose of being re-elected. He admitted several times that this was really the true purpose of his campaign to "rid America of the Communist threat".
He was a raging alcoholic, a self-loathing homosexual and a sociopath who would do or say whatever it would take to become re-elected. He denounced anyone and everyone who questioned his motives and his acumen. Such people were prevented from ever working again, and many were deported or imprisoned, solely on his word as a US Senator.
His entire premise that he relied upon to be re-elected was that there are "commies in every aspect of the federal and state governments and they're going to eat your babies". He used this over and over to get re-elected, it was his only campaign theme throughout his entire career.
When he started going after the Military, people finally had had enough and let him destroy himself in front of the entire congress, on national television. He died, of Cirrhosis of the liver, alone and his reputation completely destroyed by his own actions. He thoroughly deserved it.
His entire campaign was phony, and was only a tool to get him re-elected. He was a fear-monger, an outright liar and his alcohol abuse had severely damaged his brain by the time he was first elected. This was reflected in his method of campaigning for office.
