364924's blog: "About my Kids"

created on 12/08/2006  |  http://fubar.com/about-my-kids/b32587
Well let me start at the beginning..... When I was 34 weeks pregnant the doctor did an ultrasound because I wanted to know if she was a boy or a girl. He found something unusual about it and sent us to the hospital for a better ultrasound. They said that there was something wrong with her intestines and sent us to Columbia to a specialist. The specialist (Dr. Floyd) did another ultrasound and a stress test and found that there was something wrong with her. I went once a week to Columbia (a 2 hour drive one way) for a non stress tests and ultra sounds. She was found to have a distended stomach (excess fluid) and I was scheduled to have her by C Section at 39 weeks (December 13, 2004). They also told us that she would go strait to the NICU and have exploratory surgery to fix the problem. She would have to stay between 6-8 weeks. This upset me because I so wanted her home for Christmas!! (Day Before^^)I was sooooo HUGE!!!! The day finally arrived and Faith Isabelle was born at 9:15 am. I got to see her for just a minute and they rushed her off to get a sonagram of her internal organs and try to pin point the problem. They came to my room and informed us that is wasn't her intestines but her kidneys. According to them was better then what they thought it was going to be. She had her 1st surgery at 3 hours old. They went in and took the right ureter (the tube that connects a kidney to the bladder on each side) and made a hole above her pubic bone on the right side and attached the ureter to it. (That way the kidney can drain directly into her diaper.) they said that there is no function at all of the right kidney and that it will have to be removed. The left one is functioning well. (there is some reflux in it but hopefully that will correct itself) She weighed 8 pounds 15 ounces at birth and 7 pounds 13 ounces after this surgery. She got to come home from the hospital just 6 days after birth so she was here for Christmas! Fast Forward to August....... Faith is now 20 months old and has been in the hospital 16 times, she has had 5 surgeries, the most major being in November (she was 11 months old) they took her right kidney out and tried to fix her left. Monday (July 3rd) she went in for another surgery to try again and fix the reflux in her left kidney. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be her last surgery!! She is behind with walking and talking but we are working close with PT and Speech and she is making progress!! Update as of December 8' 06 Faith Will be 2 on Dec. 13th. She finally started walking a month ago. She still dont talk and is small for her age. (but still biger then the doctors thought she would be.) She has not had to be back in the hospital since July!! Altho she has had Pnamonia (SP?) twice already this winter. I am really hoping that we are able to spend Christmas at home this year!! Faith has taught me to cherish every moment with my children! We thought we were going to lose her several times. I don't know how we have made it through the last year and a half without having a breakdown!!
