Assyrians became Christians during the first century AD,[53] though not until during the third century had they all become Christians.[29] Some Assyrians also claim that their ancestors became Christians during the lifetime of Jesus.[66] Jesus spoke of "Men of Nineveh", repenting from their old sins; this refers to when the prophet Jonah visited the Assyrian capital Nineveh:
The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
