A comedic legend

"Hey, wait a second... he was just here a minute ago." That's the best way I can think of to pay tribute to one of the most influential entertainers (to me at least) who passed away. And the reason it is so fitting is because George Carlin himself said in an AP interview that is exactly how he wanted to be memorialized. At least someone should do what he wished for, right? I listened to so many comedy tapes and albums growing up (yes, I'm old - I listened to tapes and albums, not CDs!). The first one I remember was Bill Cosby in the 70s, before he became really big. That lead to Robin Williams (before he became really hyper), Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Rodney Dangerfield... gosh, if I could find my old cassette holder there's probably another half dozen or more that were part of my regular listening routine that I'm forgetting. But George Carlin was the one that made me think. The thing that kept me coming back was his point-blank observations at so many things - phrases, behavior, language - that make no sense but we accept them anyway. While I'm still a religious person, I could appreciate his counter-culture views on it and poking holes in theological belief and punishment/reward structures. My favorite album(s) were the Classic Gold collection, which is actually 2 albums (tapes) that reflect some of his work in the mid to late 70s. I remember them for the variety of topics and showcasing many of his talents. He was great at voices and dialects, but most people who only listened to his most recent work don't realize it. His material in the 80s grew more political, and the early 90s I'd characterize as his most 'nasty' years as a comic. But like most things, Carlin still became better with age. Within the last decade he was still challenging us to think while making us laugh. The edge was still there, but it wasn't as hateful or vengeful as other material. Not that he cared, I'm sure, about offending anyones delicate sensibilities. I was lucky enough to see him live 3 times, most recently 14 months ago at the University of Northern Iowa. He left me laughing and thinking each time, but sadly at the last performance I could tell that age was starting to catch up with him a bit. It didn't make me enjoy his performance any less, though. As a final farewell tribute, I'll just ask one question (true Carlin fans will get it): Hey... what are we supposed to do with all your stuff?!?
