CHLOE'S STORY
Chloe Cooper was born April 20, 2009. She was born with many life threatening birth defects. She had no lower jaw, no ears, 2 holes in her heart, a spinal cord defect and multiple others. Chloe was tracked at birth to provide a stable airway since her lack of jaw wouldn't allow her airway to stay open. She faced many surgeries in the first 7 months she stayed at Denver Children's Hospital, including a major heart repair. She came home completely ventilator dependent and stayed that way for 2 1/2 years until finally becoming stable enough to wean her way off the vent completely. When Chloe was 3 years old her family traveled to Cincinnati to start the long process of reconstructing her a jawbone. The jaw was reconstructed out of her own shoulder blade. This took 2 surgeries of 14 hours long each, just to get the bone placed specifically where it needed to be. This brings us to the present. Chloe is now 4 and just returned from Ohio, having had the 3rd facial reconstruction. During the last surgery the doctors used a device that was placed in her jaw and mid-face with pins. The distractor pulled facial bones forward to allow room for a stable airway, in hopes that eventually she will have enough airway to breathe without the use of a trach, and allow her eat by mouth. Chloe gets all of her nutrition through a feeding tube at this time. Chloe has had 16 surgeries up to this point and we hoping to be getting close to the end. She will need at least 1-2 more jaw distractions and ear reconstruction. Chloe is raised by a single mother and has an older sister and brother. She is the light of our lives and is definitely a gift from the good Lord. She is a walking miracle, communicating by sign language only. She lights up every room with her strong spirit and we cherish everyday with this beautiful child.
