Today in history, September 14, 1901, the President of the United States died after being shot during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo New York by a gunman.
President William McKinley died after a Polish-American anarchist named Leon Czolgosz shot him at point blank range with a .32 revolver 8 days previous.
Doctors had worked on McKinley but failed to find the bullet and gangrene set in and spread throughout his body.
The Republican President McKinley was known as a protector of big business and was a proponent of tariffs used against foreign competition during the Industrial Age.
His foreign policy included intervening in Cuba’s struggle for independence and autonomy from Spanish colonial rule.
The United States defeated Spain during the Spanish-American war, and the U.S. annexed and acquired Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam making America a colonial power for the first time.
When the Boxer Rebellion kicked up in China, McKinley sent thousands of U.S. troops to suppress it with his “Open Door” policy.
McKinley believed that China should be independent and that all nations who have a monetary and business interest in China should be able to compete in China.
The Boxer Rebellion’s aims were to drive foreigners out of China, while McKinley believed it should be an “Open Door” policy for all to do business as usual.
Hmm, this historically sounds a little too familiar with respect to Iraq and a war that was waged based on lies and cooked evidence, as a pretext to open it up for business as usual by Halliburton, Bechtel, Black-Water, and a host of others.
